While Creek torments Brent, and Brent enjoys his fiber, I want to get serious for a second.

In my little world of my job and just life in general, I realized how many times the subject of racism has come up in conversations and other cultures, and talking with a great guy in Ireland lately, plus a lot of other related subjects happening like the taking down of statues of Confederate Generals and such in the Land of Dixie. That has been a big subject at work with many different opinions. I do my best to just stay out of that conversation.

It just seems to me personally this all happened real sudden like. And reading all your posts and dealing with a guy on another forum, who I am not dealing with anymore, and soon to see my job go to Mexico, and working in a company they describe as diverse in culture, something struck me hard and out of the blue about people and I want to share it with you all.

Creek, you gave me some real good advice on how to tell people I am a dry fly fisher so they wouldn’t be offended and call me a snob. And yet we make fun of nymphers and bait fishermen, but really don’t mean anything of it. Right? Wink, wink. Then just a few days ago, the terrorist act in Manchester happened. We are watching North Korea very carefully right now, and Russia is in the news daily.

Well, I had an epiphany today. I also had to look that word up in the dictionary. And feel free to quote me if you want because this is some really profound stuff I am about to tell you.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a fly, bait or spin fisher. It don’t matter what color you are, or what country you come from. It don’t matter what religion you are, or are not. Rich or poor, it don’t matter.
That’s right my fly fishing friends, NOTHING matters. And here’s why. ( Creek, quit rolling your eye’s )

The reason is, at the end, when it’s all said and done, to a grizzly bear, we ALL taste like chicken.

Scotty my friend, some things matter more than you may think, and that’s from a old man who used think it does not matter. But once you get close to seeing your own mortality suddenly many things become very clear. I cant explain to you or make it make sense to you, because when I was a young man no one could tell some beliefs I held then I would totally discard at this point in life. Things do matter, if they didn’t what a even worse world this would be. I really don’t care what people think of me or what I do, and yes I only fly fish now, and yea I have got some orvis stuff and simms stuff and a some nice rods and I like dry fly fish. I like to drink good beer and I belive in God. I respect other people rights and hope they respect mine. Don’t take evey thing to seriously and do what you love.

Hey Mike, nice post. Believe me when I say I hear you clearly, and I understand.

I’m just letting off some steam I have been building up with a little bit of humor. And when the thought about how we all taste like chicken to a grizzly entered into my head, I thought to myself, no one is better than anyone. So if we all taste the same to a grizzly, what’s to argue about? I hope you understand because I’m having a bad time trying to explain it.

It’s all good Mike. I too am a believer in God and don’t mind a good ale now and then. But never when I’m fishing.

Scotty: Haha. Yep. In my case, its chicken with a Muskol marinade. I’m one of those lucky people whose work and play have kept them outside much of life, and whose body chemistry is apparently irresistible to blackflies and mosquitoes. I get invited on fishing trips by people who want me along as the ‘designated decoy’.

Keep posting those deep thoughts! Without your contributions, this forum would have drifted down around the bend like a poorly knotted Adams.

Thanks Brent. I do what I can to help keep this forum going, even if it isn’t fishing related.

I like this forum very much, because the members here, how few there are, make it what it is. Of all the forums I visit, this has the best class of people.

This was a very insightful and interesting read, Scotty. I agree with your points, a 100%.
